smok were employed by the main contractor, to provide the architectural detailed design and to act as the lead consultant for the construction phases of the project.
The detailed design for the extension was developed from the existing theatre, and required close liaison with the original architects to ensure continuity of details, whilst maintaining close control over the cost and buildability constraints of the new building.
The external construction is composed of cavity construction walls with fair faced external blockwork, single ply roofing membrane, timber windows and fibrous cement rain-screen cladding. Internally, plywood ceilings and decorated fibrous cement boards were used. This carefully considered palette was chosen to compliment the existing building and ensure the new extension sits comfortably side by side with the original theatre.
