Upper Phillimore Gardens

Refurbishment of a five-storey residential property for The Phillimore Trust. The design included a full overhaul of the existing external fabric including new rear additions, new roof extension, significant basement works and landscaping to the rear garden.

Appointed directly by the main contractor, smok coordinated the subcontractor’s design packages for this traditional JCT contract, whilst liaising directly with the client’s architects to monitor and manage design information release and assist in the development of the detailed design up to construction status.

The high level of material specification and quality of finish, coupled with the intricacy of the required detailing were critical to the client throughout the property. This attention to detail is clearly illustrated by the design of the new main staircases which, due to the complex material interfaces, prompted the unconventional decision to complete the veneering process on site to preserve quality of detail and finish.

Belgrave Square

Located on the historical Belgrave Square in the west end of London, this Grade I listed property was refurbished by a private client and was the practice’s first involvement in a major residential project.

Appointed by the main contractor to assist in the design development/production information process, we worked closely with the Client’s architects and assisted in the design management and delivery of subcontractors’ packages.

The project included the excavation of new sub-basements for a swimming pool, rebuilding of an existing mews house and a complete refurbishment of the main five storey house.

Highlights included the hand made white marble Corinthian capitals set onto ‘single piece’ marble columns and a series of replica Roman mosaic floors which were hand-made in Italy, and installed to the base of the swimming pool.
